Thomas Jensen, son of Niels Martinus Jensen (Rod) and Bodil Marie Thomsen, was born 9 Dec 1869 in Skibsted Sogn, Aalborg Amt, Danmark.[1][2] His parents were not yet married,[1] although they did marry about a year and a half after his birth.[3] Thomas was baptized at Skibsted Kirke on 18 Apr 1870.[1]
Early Life
Thomas was vaccinated for smallpox on 1 Jun 1879 at age 9.[2]
By 1880, Thomas had moved from Skibsted Sogn to neighboring Lyngby Sogn with his family.[4] By 1884, Thomas had moved to Askildrup in Blenstrup Sogn, where he was working for Peder Kristensen,[2] who had been born in nearby Lyngby Sogn[5] where Thomas' family was living at the time. He was confirmed in his Lutheran faith on 20 Apr 1884 at Blenstrup Kirke, Blenstrup Sogn, Aalborg Amt, Danmark.[2] At this time in Denmark, most children were confirmed at around age 14 or 15 as it was required when they got their first job.
Immigration
Thomas Jensen was among the last of his family to immigrate to the United States. First, his eldest sister, Rasmine immigrated through Copenhagen, Oslo, and New York headed for Whiting, Kansas in late 1889.[6][7][8] Next, his father also headed for Whiting, Kansas in early 1890. [9][10] His mother and youngest siblings came to the United States early in the summer of 1890.[11][12][13][14][15][16]
Finally, on 11 Nov 1890, Thomas,[17] and his two sisters, Metta Kirstine (Christine "Minnie") and Karoline (Caroline Margaret "Lena") came in late 1890.[18] They arrived in Baltimore onboard the ship America, 27 Nov 1890.[19]
Thomas became a naturalized citizen in 1895.[20] At that time, he was living in Kansas.[21]
Marriage and Family
On 23 Feb 1895 in Hiawatha in Brown County, Kansas, Thomas Jensen married Meta (Mary) Thompsen, also from Denmark.[22] At the time of the census later that year, they were living with her parents and siblings in Whiting Township, Jackson County, Kansas.[21] His brother Carl was nearby living with and working for Peter Linnaman, also from Denmark.[23] By 1900, he had moved his family to 7th Street in the town of Savannah in Carroll County, Illinois where he was working as a day laborer.[24]
Thomas and Meta had four children, one of which died before reaching adulthood.[24][25] Based on the information provided in the 1900 census, the child that died young was likely their first child and was born in 1895 or 1896 and died before 1900.[24] This child may have been the ten week old baby named Chris Jensen living with Thomas' parents at the time of the 1895 census.[26] Meta's father's name was Christian and it was common to name a first child after one of the grandparents. The other three children were
By 1910, the family had moved from 7th Street to 248 Diagonal Street in Savanna, Illinois.[25] By 1920, they had moved to 229 Diagonal Street in Savanna.[20] Anna, who would have been about 20, was no longer living with the family.[20] It is likely that she had married and moved out. Son Thomas C. Jensen is listed as Chris T. Jensen and has also married. He and his wife, Mary, are living with his parents and his younger brother William.[20] All the children had moved out by 1930. Thomas and Meta were living alone at 419 North 5th Street in Savanna. They owned their own home. Thomas, who was age 60, was working as a laborer at odd jobs.[27] In 1940, they were still living at 419 North 5th Street in Savanna.[28]
Education and Occupation
Thomas Jensen had the equivalent of an 8th grade education.[28] He first went to work in Denmark as a farmhand.[29] In 1900, Thomas was working as a day-laborer in Savanna, Illinois.[24] By 1910, he was working as a car repairman for the railroad in Savanna, Illinois.[25] In 1920, Thomas had been promoted to a car inspector for the railroad.[20] In 1930, he was doing odd jobs.[27] In 1940, at the age of 70, Thomas had a job as a caretaker of a park.[28]
Death and Burial
Thomas Jensen died on 15 Oct 1964, at the age of 94 and was buried in the Savanna Township Cemetery, Savanna, Carroll County, Illinois.[30]
