At the time of her birth, true middle names were unknown in Denmark. All given names were considered to be of equal weight and any one alone or any combination could be used at any time on any document. She was christened Metta Kristine Jensen, but was always known within the family as Minnie. When she came to the United States, documents usually used either the name Christine or the name Minnie.
Birth and Baptism
Metta Kristine Jensen, daughter of Bodil Marie Thomsen and Niels Martinus Jensen (Rod), was born 19 Jan 1873 in the village of Smidie in Bælum Sogn, Aalborg Amt, Danmark.[1] She was baptized in 2 Jun 1873 at Bælum Kirke, in Bælum Sogn.[1]
Early Life
Kristine lived her early life with her family in the area around Bælum Sogn, Lyngby Sogn and Skibsted Sogn in Aalborg Amt, Danmark. The family was living in Lyngby Sogn at the time of the 1880 census.[2]
Kristine had five years of schooling before she entered the workforce.[3] She was confirmed in her Lutheran faith at the age of 14 at nearby Skibsted Kirke in Skibsted Sogn on 17 Apr 1887 although she was listed as being from Lyngby Sogn.[4] No employer was listed at the time of her confirmation as was common, but by the time of the 1890 census, she was working as a farm servant in the household of Peder Nielsen in Skibsted Sogn.[5]
Immigration
Metta Kristine Jensen was among the last of her family to immigrate to the United States. First, her eldest sister, Rasmine immigrated through Copenhagen, Oslo, and New York headed for Whiting, Kansas in late 1889.[6][7][8] Next, her father also headed for Whiting, Kansas in early 1890. [9][10] Her mother and youngest siblings came to the United States early in the summer of 1890.[11][12][13][14][15][16]
Finally, on 11 Nov 1890, Metta Kristine, her sister Karoline (Caroline Margaret "Lena")[17] and her brother Thomas,[18] came. They arrived in Baltimore onboard the ship America, 27 Nov 1890.[19]
It is not known whether Kristine went all the way to Kansas. Her brother Thomas and her sister Lena and most, if not all, her other siblings did travel to Jackson County, Kansas and appear there in the 1895 census. But by 1895, Kristine was married and living in Blue Island, Illinois outside Chicago, so there is no evidence of her going to Kansas first if she did.
Marriage and Family
On 27 Nov 1894 in Cook County, Illinois, Christine married Emile Friske of Blue Island, Illinois.[20] Emile was the son of German immigrants, Gustav Friske and Emilie Falske. Christine and Emil had six children, four of whom lived to become adults:
Edward Paul Friske was born 18 July 1896 in Blue Island[21][22][23]
Alfred Adolfe Friske was born 20 Jul 1897 in Blue Island[24][25][22][23]
Nelson William Friske was born 9 Sep 1898 in Blue Island[26][25][22][23]
Marie Friske was born in Dec 1899 and died before the 1910 census[25][22]
an unknown infant was born and died between the 1900 and 1910 census.[25][22]
Ivan Lawrence Friske was born 24 Feb 1911 in Blue Island[27][23]
Christine and Emil lived their married life in Blue Island, Illinois, mostly on West Broadway Street or within a few blocks of that address.
1910: They were renting on Desplaines Street in Blue Island.[22]
1920: They owned their home on Broadway Street.[23]
1930: They owned their home at 2311 Broadway Street and they had a radio set.[28]
1940: Christine and Emil are listed as owning their residence at 2311 W. Broadway with their son Ivan and his wife renting at the same address.[3]
Christina Friske died on 10 Jul 1946 in Blue Island, Illinois and was buried on 13 Jul 1946 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Blue Island, Cook County, Illinois.[30]
