Danish naming conventions did not include the concept of middle names. Where there were multiple given names, all were considered equivalent and any could, and were, used for various events. Please do not put her given names in the middle name field. Brandt-1372 12:15, 8 April 2017 (EDT) Mary Ann Brandt Jensen
Although she was christened Petrea Caroline Margaret Jensen in Denmark, she never used the name Petrea in the United States. Within the family, she was always called Lena and she used that name on many official documents including her marriage record. Caroline or Caroline Margaret appears on a few records, most notably her death record.
Birth and Baptism
Petrea Caroline Margaret Jensen, daughter of Bodil Marie Thomsen and Niels Martinus Jensen (Rod), was born 23 May 1875 in the village of Svanfolk, Skibsted Sogn, Aalborg Amt, Denmark.[1][2][3] She was christened at Skibsted Kirke on 17 Apr 1876.[1] Her sponsors were Maren Nielsen, Anne Jacobsen, Jens Svendsen, Peder Jacobsen, and Hans Pedersen, all of Svanfolk.[1]
Early Life
Karoline was four years old at the time of the 1880 Danish census, living with her family in Lyngby Sogn.[4]
She was confirmed in her Lutheran faith about a month before her 12th birthday on 14 Apr 1887 at Skibsted Kirke.[2] Her confirmation was a little early as most children at that time were confirmed around age 14.
At the time of the 1890 Danish census, she was a servant in the household of Christian Wraae and his wife Christine in Nørresundby, Nørresundby Sogn, Aalborg Amt, Denmark.[5]
Immigration
Metta Kristine Jensen was among the last of her family to immigrate to the United States. First, her eldest sister, Rasmine immigrated through Copenhagen, Oslo, and New York headed for Whiting, Kansas in late 1889.[6][7][8] Next, her father also headed for Whiting, Kansas in early 1890. [9][10] Her mother and youngest siblings came to the United States early in the summer of 1890.[11][12][13][14][15][16]
Finally, on 11 Nov 1890, Karoline (Caroline Margaret "Lena") and her sister Metta Kristine ("Minnie)[17] and her brother Thomas,[18] came. They arrived in Baltimore onboard the ship America, 27 Nov 1890.[19]
After arriving in the United States, Lena traveled to Kansas where her parents and some of her siblings had settled. In the 1895 Kansas census, she is recorded as living with her parents on their farm in Netawaka Township near Whiting, Kansas and attending school. [20]
Marriage and Family
Lena married Paul Friske, a native of Croestber, Germany, on 19 May 1899 in Chicago, Illinois.[21] They lived all their married life in Blue Island, Illinois.[22][23][24] She and Paul had at least six children:
Herman Alfred John Friske was born 10 Jun 1900 in Blue Island and died 6 Jan 1961 in Chicago[25]
Robert William Friske was born 14 Jun 1905 in Blue Island[26][22]
Alice Modesta Friske Collatz was born 6 Jul 1907 and died in Dec 1984[27][22]
Paul Friske, Jr. was born 6 Apr 1913 in Blue Island and died 8 Sep 1925 in Blue Island.[28][22]
Rose Marie Friske Gustavson was born 17 Aug 1914 in Chicago[29] and died 28 Jan 1979 in Harvey, Illinois[30][22]
Helen Friske was born 27 Dec 1916 in Blue Island[31] and died 13 Sep 1917 in Blue Island[32]
Death and Burial
Caroline Margaret Jensen Friske died on 25 Jul 1959 at the age of 84 in Blue Island, Illinois.[3] She was buried on
29 Jul 1959 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Blue Island, Illinois.[3]
Research Note
There is another child, Christopher E. Friske, born 15 January 1895 in Kansas Territory, whose death certificate lists Lena Jensen and Paul Friske as his parents.[33] His Social Security records also list Paul Friske and Caroline (Lena's proper given name) Jensen as his parents.[34] However, he appears in the March 1895 census as a 10 weeks old baby named Chris Jensen in his grandparents household along with his then unmarried mother.[35] And in the 1900 census and also when he first appears in the 1920 census as a single man living outside the Friske household, both of his parents are listed as having been born in Denmark, while Paul Friske was born in Germany. Thus, it appears most likely that Lena already had a child when she married Paul Friske whom Paul Friske, either officially or informally, adopted and raised as his own. It is possible his biological father was the Pete Polson living with the Jensen family in the 1895 census. See Family Search Profile FamilySearch Person: GC2R-63R
