Biography

Emma Kemp was the younger daughter of Thomas Kemp of Mount Schanck Station and later Port MacDonnell in South Australia.

She was born in 1850.[1]

She married Jesse James Berresford on 5 December 1876 at the residence of Rev James Pollitt in Adelaide, South Australia.[2]

They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in December 1926 with their seven children and 18 grandchildren. A notice in The Register recorded: "GOLDEN WEDDINGS. BERRESFORD — KEMP. — On the 5th December, 1876, at St. Luke's Church, Adelaide, by Archdeacon Potter, Jesse James, eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Berresford, Adelaide, to Emma, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Kemp, Mount Schank, S.E. Present address — Clilton street, Maylands."[3]

The News reported: "GOLDEN WEDDING. Family Gathering Held. At St. Luke's Church 50 years ago the marriage of Emma. younger daughter of Mr. Thomas Kemp. of MIount Schlank. and Jesse James. eldest son of Mr. William Beresford. was solemnised by Canon Pollitt. The fiftieth anniversary of that happy event was celebrated at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Berry. Annesley avenue. North Norwood. where the whole family of seven children and 18 grandchildren foregathered as a surprise party to congratulate Mr. and Mrs. Berresford. The dining room was decorated with paper streamers, flowers, and a large white bell. Mr. W. Berresford. on behalf of the company, presented Mrs. Berresford with a purse of sovereigns. Mrs. Davis made a similar gift to Mr. Berresford. Mr. and Mrs. Berresford. reside at Clifton street. Maylands. They have two sons—Mr. W. Berresford (Maylands) and Mr. B. Perresford (Kilkenny). and five daughtes-Mr—Mrs. W. Davis (Cheltenham). Mrs. F. Ingham (Welland). Mrs. F. Glover (Blackwood). Mrs. W. H. Berry (North Norwood). and Mrs. P. Botting (Maylands)."[4]

She died on 14 June 1945, at her house in Clifton Street, Maylands, South Australia.[5]
