Thomas Kemp was an early settler in the Wimmera in rural Victoria.
He was born in 1839 at Chrishall, Essex.[1]
He died on 7 April 1912 at Horsham, Victoria. His obituary in the Horsham Times recorded:
Obituary. MR. THOS. KEMP. SEN. Another of the pioneer farmers of the Wimmera, in the person of Mr. Thomas Kemp, of Urquhart street, Horsham, passed quietly and peacefully away on Sunday last in the presence of his family. Deceased was 72 years of age, and up to a year ago he had enjoyed good health, and had only recently left his farm and taken up his residence in Horsham, with his wife and other members of the family. He was a native of Essex. England, and was born on the 5th April, 1840. When quite a lad he came to Australia, and for some years lived in Mount Gambler where he married in 1862 Miss Esther Creek.'who survives him, the marriage proving a happy union. After a few years' residence in Mount Gambier, he was amongst the first settlers who took up land in the Wimmera. He like other early settlers passed through many hardships. Deceased was well-known and respected in the Pimpinio district, was a member of the Methodist Church, and a Sunday school teacher. He leaves a widow and a family of fifteen. Seven sons and six daughters survive, viz., Mrs. P. Smith, W. T. Kemp, Mrs. T. Barber, Richard Kemp, W. J. Kemp. Mrs. J. Baum, A. Kemp, Robert Kemp, Mrs. Alf. Brook, J. Kemp. Mrs. A. W. Collins. A. G. Kemp and Miss May Kemp; also a brother, Mr. R. Kemp, of Mount Gambier, and two sisters, Mrs. A. E. Campbell and Mrs. J. Bedsford. both of Adelaide. The funeral took place on Sunday aftetnoon and was largely attended, the interment being made in the Pimpinio cemetery. The burial service was read by the Rev. J. Edwards, and the funeral arrangements were under the direction of Mr. W. F. Allan. Messrs. E. Ellis, T. Ball, A. Bolwell, G. Smith, D. Munro and P. Reinheimer were pall-bearers."[2]
