Note N108The first Kilgore descendant that we can document is Charles Kilgore, born January 4, 1764 in Orange (west of Durham), North Carolina. Charles fought in the American Revolutionary War at the battle of King's Mountain (30 miles west of Charlotte). He was a private in Captain Cowan's Virginia Troops which is noted on his foot stone at the Kilgore Cemetery in Raglesville, Indiana. Ellen Sommers Poindexter and other descendants joined the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) through his service. 'Charles married Avarilla Simpson about 1790 in Greene, North Carolina. Avarilla was the daughter of R. & S. Simpson. Charles and his wife had eight children, the oldest of which was Hiram Kilgore.

died November 28, 1844, and Avarilla Simpson Kilgore died June 1, 1857. They are buried in the Kilgore Cemetery in Raglesville, Daviess County, Indiana. Hiram married Nancy Grant on October 6, 1806, in Wayne, Kentucky. Their daughter, Pharzina Kilgore, born in 1809, married Moses Woodruff.

In 1830 Hiram and his family lived in Daviess County, Indiana, but by 1860 Hiram and Nancy reside in Otter Creek Township, Lucas County, Iowa. He is a farmer whose real estate is worth 3 and whose personal property is worth 0. In the census for 1860 it states that Hiram was born in Georgia and Nancy in South Carolina.

From the history written on Daviess County, Indiana, the following excerpt on Van Buren Township in Daviess County......"Charles Kilgore came in 1827, bringing with him his three sons: Hiram, Simpson, and Stephen." They would have been four of the very earliest settlers - other settlers known to be there as early as 1818.
