Biography

Carl Kophamer was born on 25 March 1890 in Whiteside County, Illinois. He was a son of Louis Kophamer and Mattie Otten.

Chas [sic] C. Kophamer appeared in the household of his father for the 1900 U.S. Census at Genesee Township, Whiteside County. He was listed as 10 years old, born in March of 1890 in Illinois. He was recorded as attending school, and was able to read and write. He was living with his parents and six of his siblings.[1]

By the time the 1910 census was enumerated, Carl had moved with his family to Sterling Township and was listed as a 20 year old laborer, born in Illinois. He was single, able to read and write, and was living on a farm with his parents and three of his siblings.[2]

According to a draft registration card dated 5 June 1917, Carl K. Kophamer was a 27 year old farmer, born 25 March 1890 in Mt. Pleasant Township, Illinois. According to the card, Carl was single, and living in Clyde Township, Morrison, Illinois, where he was employed by Lewis Kophamer. The card was signed, Carl K. Kophamer.[3]

In the 1920 census for Clyde Township, Whiteside County, Carl Kophamer was recorded as a 29 year old farm laborer and born in Illinois. He was living with his parents and two siblings.[4]

Carl Kophamer must have married Estella Lessman between March of 1920 and March of 1921. In the 1930 census at Clyde Township, Carl was listed as a 40 year old farmer, born in Illinois, first married at age 30. He was living on a rented farm with his wife Estella, their two children, and one helper, George Kick.[5]

Carl had moved to Arcadia, Los Angeles County in 1932, where he continued farming, and opened a rather well known sweet corn stand.[6] In the 1940 census at Arcadia City, Morovia Township, los Angeles County, Carl Kophamer was listed as 50 years old and born in Illinois. The highest grade he was recorded to have completed in school was eighth. Carl was now living on a rented farm with his wife Estella and two children.[7]

Estella (Lessman) Kophamer died in 1973.[8][9] Carl Kophamer died 23 May 1988 in Kern County, California.[10][11] Carl and Estella are buried together at Live Oak Memorial Park, Monrovia, Los Angeles County, California.
