Biography

Matie was born in the German Confederation in February of 1859 (headstone [1], 1900 census [2]). According to one source, she was recorded as born on 18 February 1859 at Minssen, Germany, the daughter of Jno (Johann?) G Otten, but the source provided no image of the original document. (Illinois, U.S., Deaths and Stillbirths Index, 1916-1947 [3]. (She appeared on various sources as Meta, Matie (headstone), Mattie and Margaret.) Note: Minssen Germany could not be located and was doubtless an error. It is possible the correct location was Meissen, or Minden, Germany, but it could also be possible Matie was from East Frisia (Oostfreesland). She reported immigrating to the U.S. in 1881, 1882, 1884 in the census reports. She married Louis Kophamer on 5 December 1884 at Hopkins Township [4], Whiteside County, Illinois [5]. They had at least nine children together.

Matie K. Kophamer appeared in the household of her husband for the 1900 U.S. Census at Genesee Township, Whiteside County. She was recorded as 41 years old, born in February of 1859 in Germany, married 15 years, the mother of 7 children (7 living), and had immigrated in 1882. Her parents were noted to have been born in Germany and she was able to read and write, and speak English. She was living with her husband and seven of their children. [6]

Matie was listed as Magrate Kophmer in her husband's household at Sterling Township, Whiteside County in 1910. She was recorded as 50 years old, born in Germany and married 25 years. She was the mother of 10 children with 10 living. Her year of immigration was noted as 1869, the same as her husband's, but looked to be crossed out and corrected to 1881. She and Louis were living with four of their children. [7]

In 1920 Matie was living with Louis at Clyde Township, Whiteside County, where she was listed as Mattie Kophamer, 60 years old, born in Germany, had immigrated in 1881 and been naturalized in 1885. She was living with her husband and four of their children. [8]

Matie and Louis had moved back to Sterling Township by 1930. Matie was listed as Margaret C. Kophamer, 71 years old and first married at the age of 25. Her year of immigration was 1884 Mattie and Louis were living in a house that was valued at $3500, with their two of their children.[9]

Mattie died in 1935 (headstone [1]), and according to Illinois, U.S., Deaths and Stillbirths Index, 1916-1947, on 4 October in Sterling and was buried on 6 October. She shares a headsrone with her husband Louis at Riverside Cemetery in Sterling. [1]
