Biography
Jonathan Landes was the eldest son of Samuel Landes and his first wife Elizabeth Sheets. He was born on September 28, 1817 in Augusta County, Virginia. His family was a branch of the Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Mennonites, where their formal vital records were still kept.
On December 21, 1838, Jonathan married Catherine Wise Landes in Staunton, Augusta County. She was the daughter of John Landes and Easter (var: Esther) Wise.
The name Wise has been researched and was a valid spelling of that surname.
Catherine had a sister Eliza Landes who married Joseph Hawkins on December 18, 1856 in Augusta County. He was the son of Noah Hawkins and Sarah "Sally" Avery of Augusta County.
Because of missing Civil War era records and the common names, proving research is challenging on John and Easter's branch of Landes'.
