Biography

John Boucher Lasher, a son of Leonard Lasher and Ritie Kimmey, was baptized in the Bethlehem Reformed Church in July 1869.[1] The 1900 U.S. Census indicates that he was born in September 1868.

On 1 August 1870, the 1870 U.S. Census recorded Leonard Lasher, age 24, and Mariah L. Lasher, age 31, in the town of Bethlehem, New York (Bethlehem Center post office), with their one-year-old son John B. Lasher. Leonard was a teamster who reported $1200 in real estate.[2]

The 1875 New York State Census recorded the Lasher family household in Bethlehem, New York. Residents were Leonard Lasher, 29, a farm hand, his wife Maria L. Lasher, 37; sons John B. Lasher, 6, Ira J(?) Lasher, 4, and Asa B Lasher, 11 months; and James M. Campbell, 26, a boarder. All were born in New York except James Campbell, who was born in England.[3]

The 1892 New York state census recorded Leonard G. Lasher, age 47, in Bethlehem with Maria L. Lasher, 53, John B. Lasher, 24, Ira M. Lasher, 21, Asa B. Lasher, 18, and Frank R. Lasher, 13. All males in the household were listed with the occupation "Laborer."[4]

John B. Lasher married Annie A. Miller on 24 December 1898 in Voorheesville, New York. [5] In 1900 they were living in his parents' household in Bethlehem, where the 1900 U.S. Census recorded Leonard Lasher, age 46 (born November 1853),[6] with wife Maria L. Lasher, age 60 (born April 1830), son John B. Lasher, 31 (born September 1868), son Ira M. Lasher, 28 (born June 1871), son Aica B. Lasher, 25 (born June 1874), and daughter-in-law Anna A. Lasher, 21 (born November 1878), all born in New York to parents born in New York. Anna was apparently the wife of John B. Lasher; both of them had been married for 1 year. All males in the household were farm laborers.[7]

The 1905 New York Census found John B. Lasher as head of a household in Bethlehem, New York. He was age 36, a farm laborer. Living with him were his wife, Anna A. Lasher, 26, nephew Howard J. Miller, 3, "sister" (actually his sister-in-law) Ellen M. Miller, 19, and Frank Lasher, 26, listed as boarder (but he was John's brother).[8]

The 1910 U.S. Census recorded John B. Lasher, age 42, a farm laborer, his wife Anna A. Lasher, 32, and Howard J. Miller, age 7, nephew, in the village of Cedar Hill, Bethlehem, New York. Anna and John had been married twelve years, and Anna had not had any children. Anna was born in England to parents born in England, and had immigrated to the United States in 1886. The others were born in New York to parents born in New York. [9]

The 1915 New York State Census recorded Annie Lasher, age 38, and John B. Lasher, age 48, in Bethlehem, Albany County, New York, with adopted son Howard Miller, age 14, all born in the United States. John Lasher was a farm laborer and Howard Miller was attending school.[10]

In 1920, the U.S. Census recorded John Lasher, age 52, and John's wife Anna Lasher, age 42, in the household of his brother Asa B. Lasher, 45 years old and a widower, on River Road in Bethlehem, New York. Others in the household were John's and Asa's unmarried brothers Ira Lasher, age 48, and Frank Lasher, age 41; and Howard Payne, age 17, recorded as Asa's nephew. All were born in New York to parents born in New York except for Anna, who was born in Dorchester, England, and had immigrated in 1900. Asa was a truck farmer and his brothers and nephew were farm laborers.[11]

John B. Lasher died in 1922 and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Bethlehem, New York. His name and life dates appear on a monument that also memorializes his parents.[12]
