Dr. Henry Latimer was a surgeon who attended the troops of the Flying Camp of Delaware, ultimately becoming Surgeon General of the Northern Division of the Continental Army. After the war, he continued his public service in the Delaware state legislature and by representing Delaware in the U.S. House and U.S. Senate.
A son of James Latimer and Sarah (Geddes) Latimer, Henry was born on 24 Apr 1752 in Newport, Delaware.[1] He studied medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, graduating from the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia in 1773 and from the Edinburg (Scotland) Medical College in 1775. He returned to the colonies and set up a medical practice in Wilmington, Delaware.[2][3]
In 1777, he received a commission as a surgeon in the Continental Army, gave up his private practice, and joined the mobile hospital of Delaware's Flying Camp, where he continued to distinguish himself and hone his medical skills.[4][5][6] In 1781, after the Battle of Yorktown, he was named Surgeon General of the Northern Division of the Continental Army.[7]
After the war, he continued to practice medicine and developed an interest in politics, both local and national.[7] He was a Federalist.[8]
In 1801, he resigned, citing poor health.
Dr. Latimer was one of the original members of the Society of the Cincinnati.[9] He was also a charter member of the Medical Society of Delaware.[7]
On 8 Dec 1785, he was briefly married to Ann Cuthbert, who died shortly after their marriage.[3][10]
On 26 Feb 1789, he married Ann Richardson, and they made their home in Newport, Delaware.[3] Henry and Ann Latimer had five children:[3]
The 1800 census records Henry Lattimore, Esquire, with a residence of Wilmington Hundred, New Castle, Delaware.[11]
