Biography

There has been documentation to link John Lee to his father, James Lee. Actually who John Lee's father is has been identified by DNA testing.[1]James Lee DNA What has also been proven through DNA testing is that John Lee genetically matches his uncle, Bryan Lee (1700s North Carolina-died 1768 in Black River District, New Hanover County, North Carolina) [1]and Bryan's father David Lee (1692- 1743 Black River District, New Hanover County, North Carolina.)[2] John Lee named his oldest son James.

DNA testing has proven that David Lee's father is not John Lee of Chowan, North Carolina nor John Lee of Nansemond, Virginia.

Caroline Lane's father and James's father both lived in or had property in Chowan, NC around 1720.

A James Lee was born around 1723 probably in Bath, North Carolina. His possible father, David Lee, was about 31 and his possible mother, Mary Sullivan, was about 23.[3]

In 1743 a James Lee bought land on 19 May 1743 at Turkey Creek, a branch of the northeast branch, of Cape Fear River, New Hanover, NC.[4] So he was of age to buy land. On 17 Dec 1744 he sold land at Turkey Creek, a branch of the northeast branch, of Cape Fear River, New Hanover, NC.[5]

Turkey Creek is about 12 miles from Topsail where the Lopers lived, possible relatives of the Lee family. See biography of Elizabeth Lewis. See Penelope Loper.

He might have married Caroline Lane in 1754 in Halifax County, North Carolina. In 1754 he received a land grant on Beaverdam Branch of the Black River in New Hanover, North Carolina.[6]

In 1755, 1780 and 1790 a James Lee was recorded in the Census in New Hanover County, North Carolina, United States.[7][8]

In the 1790 Census for New Hanover County, North Carolina are listed on the same page Michael Lobar and John Lewis, Devanes and Edward Spearman, brother of Temperance Spearman who married Soloman J. Lee, Sr., Solomon Lee (John Lee's Cousin) who married Temperance Spearman- all relatives probably.
