Biography

Y-111 DNA evidence has confirmed that the father of Bailey Leonard (1829-1899) was from the line of William Leonard (1743-1826).

Bailey's father was probably a son of Thomas Leonard (1766-1847) or of James Leonard (1775-1849). Thomas and James - both born in Guilford County, North Carolina, to William Leonard and Jemima Bailey - were pioneers of Orange County, Indiana.

Family tradition says that Bailey's parents were Bailey Leonard (1806-1874, and sometimes referred to as Bailey "sr") and Polly Cox, but the preponderence of the evidence does NOT support the tradition.

Bailey Leonard "sr" married three times, but none of his wives was named Polly Cox. Further, the probate records for Bailey "sr" named his last wife and 10 children as his heirs; none of the named children was Bailey.

On Bailey's death certificate, his parents were named as Bailey Leonard and Martha Cox. However, the informant, J. F. Phillips, was James F. Phillips - a neighbor who was 42 years Bailey's junior and who lived in the area less than 20 years. Why 27-year-old Phillips was the informant and where he acquired his information is anyone's guess.

As noted above, none of the wives of Bailey Leonard "sr" was a Cox. However, his sister, Martha Leonard - enumerated in the home of Thomas Leonard (their father) on the 1830 census, along with an under-5-year-old male (Bailey) - married Reuben Cox in 1837. Further, Bailey Leonard "jr" was enumerated - as "Baly Cox" - in the household of Reuben and Martha on the 1850 census of Orange County, Indiana.

It should be noted that on the 1830 census in the home of Thomas Leonard in addition to his wife, Ann, daughter, Martha (about 15), and little Bailey, were the two youngest of Thomas and Ann's living sons: Jabez, age 19, and Jonathan, age 16. These two young men, or even Thomas himself (though it is hard to imagine), are potential fathers of Bailey "jr".

One of the younger Bailey's descendants, H. Leonard (4th generation), has tested his Y-DNA to the 111th marker via FamilyTreeDNA. If you are or know a patrilineal descendant of William Leonard, please contact H. Leonard's daughter, D. Tripp, to exchange information.

Stumbled upon a record for a Martha Leonard's marriage to John Underwood. Without any married names uncertain if you have her.

This Martha Leonard was the daughter of Bailey Leonard "junior" (as he was/is sometimes referred to) and his one and only wife, Matilda Hubbs. Yes, I did have the information, but thank you!
