Biography

Birth

Name

    • Elisabeth Glam (Glim), also known as Elizabeth (Lijsbeth) Louisz van de Caep, might have been the illegitimate daughter of Louis van Bengale, in any case born in bondage, and Lijsbeth from the Cape (van de Caep). She was the older of the three daughters had by Lijsbeth (Sanders) and was as a three year old bought out of slavery together with her mother in 1683 by Louis. Her first child, a son, was baptized in the Cape with her 15 or 16 year sister Anna Louisz and Domingo van Bengale as witnesses. After that a daughter, Maria was baptized at Stellenbosch on the 20 Jan 1704, without the father of the child being mentioned. One of the best known free black married couples at Stellenbosch were witnesses on the occasion, namely: Jan van Ceylon and his wife Diena. Elizabeth Glam married twice. [2][3]

VC 603 is a photocopy made during the 1980s of the original, made for the Sciences Research Council (HSRC) and a copy was donated to the South African Archives, a copy going to the Cape Town repository and to the Pretoria Repository (where it is part of the FC series). The original register is now housed in the Nederduits Gereformeerde Kerkargief, Noordwal-Wes, Stellenbosch, as G1 1/1. The transcription was originally made in 2006 by Richard Ball. Corrections were received from Delia Robertson and Alwyn Smit and Corney Keller had now completely revised and amended the original transcript (February 2012).[2]

Marriage

    • it is possible that Jacobus Coetzee was the father of all the children of Lijsbeth Louisz (with exception to the first child Johannes Jurgens - bapt. 1700, died young - whom she probably had with Hans Jürgens). Delia Robertson states that this is made plain when the couple marries on 27 Nov 1724 and they are formally recognized as the parents of seven children: ... hebbende 7 kinders tussen haer beide, wanneer v[er]eenigt warden. They had eight children, namely Maria Coetzee, Elisabeth Coetzee, Jacoba Coetsee, Gerrit Jacobsz: Coetzee, Dirk Coetzee, Sara Coetzee, Johannes Coetzee and Margareta Jürgens (who, however, had died young before their marriage). [3] Delia Robertson also mentions the divergent conclusions of other researchers on the amount and biological parentage of the children set against the prevailing Roman Dutch Law of that time. [3]

Glam-2 and Lowijs-3 appear to represent the same person because: Same data. Glam-2 should be merged into Lowijs-3 as it has that name on the baptismal record ...
