Biography

Birth: 11 AUG 1814, Martock Somerset England

On 27 Jun 1837, she married Edmund Sarten.

Death: 1 DEC 1898, New Plymouth, Taranaki, New Zealand[1]

She arrived in New Zealand on the William Bryan in 1841 shown as Edward Sarteen 22 years, wife 21 years, son 1 yr 4 mths [2]. Also passenger lists shows in Settler Ships [3]. Lucy was the first woman landed by surf boat from the pioneer ship William Bryan [4].

Lucy Rodd Lye was the daughter of John and Grace Lye, born in Martock, Somerset, in 1814. She married Edmund Sarten and emigrated on the William Bryan, having three children at that time. Because she was in labour and there was a storm brewing she was given the privilege of coming ashore on the first longboat, thus becoming the first European woman to set foot in Taranaki. Lucy and John had a total of 14 children prior to 1860, when her husband died and two sons, John and Joseph were killed during the hostilities. Lucy lived for a further 38 years and was well regarded in the community.

The memorial was erected by descendants of the Sarten family in 1998, replacing a badly damaged headstone for Lucy and her daughter Martha. The original three Sarten graves were relocated in 1866 to accommodate the construction of the South Aisle and the original Vestry (now the flower porch) [5].

Lucy is buried with her husband Edmund Sarten, her daughter Martha, and her two sons Joseph and John in the St Marys Churchyard Cemetery, New Plymouth, New Zealand [6].

Probate records show Lucy Sarten's will which mentions her children in particular William Henry who she leaves her estate to, upon his death it reverts to the other children. Her children were shown as James, William Henry, Fred, Edward Franklyn, Mary Revell, Caroline Revell and Agnes Thomas. No mention of Levi or Ann Sarten. In her death certificate (a copy is shown with her will) it shows 5 males: 58 (Levi), 50 (James), 47 (William), 41 (Edward), 39 (Fred) and 3 females: 54 (Ann), 46 (Agnes) 43 (Caroline) [7].
