Edward was born in 1834. He was the son of William Hyde Manning and Lois Paine. He passed away in 1863.
Son of William H and Lois P Manning. He died the day he was to muster out.
Edward Payson Manning was born 1 Jul 1834 in Pomfret, Connecticut to William Hyde Manning and Lois Paine Manning. Every public record I've found with his birthdate lists "abt 1834" but the Manning Families of New England Genealogy states it was 1 Jul 1834. I'm inclined to go with the Manning Families Genealogy.
Fought in the Civil War on the Union Side. Source: Civil War Record He enlisted on 30 Aug 1862 in Company F, 26th Connecticut Regiment, Connecticut Volunteers which went to the Dept. of the Gulf and joined General Banks' Expedition against Port Hudson. He had been appointed second sargent, and at various times was detailed as Acting Quartermaster and Adjutant. Soon after the second assault on Port Hudson (14 Jun 1863) he was appointed Lieutenant by Governor Buckingham. When he was commissary-sargent he was conspicuous for his bravery in caring for the wounded and dying on the field of battle. He was a Christian, and during the war served at times as chaplain of his regiment. Source: Manning Families of New England Genealogy He enlisted in Company S, Connecticut 26th Infantry Regiment on 10 Nov 1862. Source: Civil War Record After the surrender of Port Hudson, the 26th was ordered home to be mustered out by reason of expiration of its term of service. He had been promoted to Full 2nd Lieutenant on 27 Jul 1863. Lieutenant Manning arrived in Norwich apparently in good health, but was almost at once prostated by malarial fever, contracted in service and he died 17 Aug 1863, the very day the muster-out papers were dated. Sources: both Manning Families of New England Genealogy and a Civil War Record about having been promoted to Full 2nd Lieutenant
