Biography

Notables Project
Chester Massey is Notable.
Chester Massey is/was a significant Ontarian .
In 1884 Hart Massey moved the Massey Manufacturing Company to Toronto, placing Chester's older brother, Charles Albert Massey in charge.

After the death of Charles in 1884, Hart Massey put Chester in charge of the company, and consolidated the ownership of the company in the hands of his surviving sons and himself (effectively cutting the children of Charles Albert Massey out of what they felt was their share of the Massey fortune). "In 1897 Walter and Chester were shocked by insinuations generated by a lawsuit which alleged that Massey Sr had taken over shares that belonged to Charles’s children. When a settlement was reached, at enormous cost to the estate, the brothers were jubilant."[1]

Under Hart Massey's continuing leadership, Massey merged with Harris & Son, Co. Ltd. of Brantford in 1891. On the death of Hart Massey in 1896, Chester's younger brother Walter became president of Massey-Harris, and Chester became treasurer. On Walter's death in 1901, Chester finally became president of the company.

He also served as president of a related company, Sawyer & Massey Co. Ltd. of Hamilton, and also as director of the Central Canada Loan & Savings Co., the National Trust Co., and the City Dairy Co. of Toronto, and was on the board of regents of Victoria University (Toronto).
