Daniel Mathew was born in Middlesex, England.
Daniel Byam Mathew was born in 1756 in St Marylebone, Middlesex, England, son of Daniel Mathew (1715–<1777) and Mary Elizabeth Byam (1729–<1814).

Daniel, son of Daniel Matthew and Mary Matthew, was baptised on 10 April 1756 in St Marylebone, Westminster, Middlesex, England.[1]

In September 1784 he married Elizabeth Dering. The newspaper announcement stated At Lambeth, Daniel Byam Mathew, Esq; to Miss Eliz Dering, second daughter of Sir Edward Dering. [2]

He passed away in 1838. The monumental Inscription in St Peter's church, St Christopher (St Kitts) states Sacred to the memory of Daniel Byam Mathew Esq., of Cavon and Pennitenny, in this island who departed this life April 26 AD 1838 aetatis suae 82. Son of Daniel Mathew of Felix Hall, in Essex, Esq., & grandson of General Mathew, Governor of the Leeward Islands. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Edward Dering of Surrenden-Dering in Kent Bart., by whom he had issue Daniel Dering and Mary Elizabeth, who married William Thomas Roe Esq., Commissioner of the Customs, also High Steward of the Savoy &c &c &c,. who died April 25 AD 1834. This tablet is erected to his memory by his only daughter, the above Mary Elizabeth Roe of Withdran, in the county of Sussex, and his sister Louisa widow of the RT Honble. James Lord Gambier (1756-1833) of Ivon Grove in the county of Bucks, Admiral of the fleet, who died April 19, AD 1833 [3]

Involvement in Slavery

Daniel owned slave plantations in the west Indies. On 6th June 1777 Daniel Byam Mathew Esqr. sold to Mr. Coulthard a Lease for a Year for Cupids Garden or Penitinny plantation, on the Island of St Kitts, West Indies. [4]

On 9 August 1798 a mortgage was agreed between Daniel Byam Mathew of Harley Street in the Parish of St. Mary in the County of Middlesex son of Daniel Matthew; Thomas Boddington of Clapham in the Parish of St. John in the County of Middlesex; Samuel Boddington of Mark Lane in the City of London Merchant and Benjamin Boddington of Mark Lane in the City of London Merchant for securing £3,329-6s.11d relating to the plantation or sugar works known as Cupids Garden and Penitinney on the island of St. Christopher (St Kitts, West Indies) [5]

The plantation reverted to Daniel who was the owner again by 1817.[6]
