Biography

Born in Dunedin in June 1876 he married Mary Murray Burt also in Dunedin. He was a retired railwayman. At the time of his retirement, he was an engine cleaner at the engine sheds in Palmerston North. This would have required removal of ash from the firebox of steam engines and the kindling of fire to start engines required for work each day. Prior to the Palmerston North assignment, he had been a porter at the Hunterville Station.

He died on the same day as his middle son's birthday. He had his lunch and sat down in his chair, went to sleep and did not wake up.
