Biography

Obituary from Covina Argus, February 4, 1932 Mrs. Elizabeth E. Aschenbrenner, 81 years of age, died early Monday morning at her home after suffering a heart attack of about one hour's duration. Mrs. Aschenbrenner had been in good health. She attended church Sunday morning at the Brethren church, as had been her custom for years, singing with the congregation the hymns she loved so well. She cam to Covina with her husband, the late William Aschenbrenner, 31 years ago. Mr. Aschenbrenner died in 1926. They came to Covina from Oregon, where they had resided ten years, having come over the Oregon Trail from Kansas. They were married in Iowa. William Aschenbrenner was a real pioneer and his wife lived the life of a pioneer woman of the West, doing much good in her life. She was a fine practical nurse and perhaps her training was on account of her being called to administer so many times to the sick and dying, and also at the birth of many of the children born to the pioneer women. Her life was filled with good deeds and acts of courage. Mrs. Aschenbrenner is survived by one son, George W. Aschenbrenner of Covina, five daughters, 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. The daughters are Mrs. Sara Yoder, who resided with her mother, Mrs. Anna Matten and Mrs. J.P. Overholtzer; Mrs. A. Lunde of Big Bear Lake; Mrs. H.D. Blanchard of Porterville. Sam Aschenbrenner, who passed away two and a half years ago, was a son. She also leaves three brothers who are living near Spokane, Washington. It was impossible for members of the family to get word of the death of her mother to Mrs. Lunde, although a strenuous effort was made by Mr. and Mrs. George Matten to get up to the resort at Big Bear Lake that Mr. and Mrs. Lunde conduct, but they could not get through the heavy snow, although they tried Tuesday and Tuesday night, but returned to Covina Wednesday morning without being successful. All telephone wires to the resort were down. The funeral was conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 at the Brethren Church, Rev. L.S. Brubaker, assisted by Rev. Shamel of the Methodist church, conducted the services. Mrs. Aschenbrenner had been a member of the church since she was a child. The church was filled with old time friends who came to pay their last respects.
