Maud, born in 1883, was the daughter of Patrick Mc Nulty and Agnes Rooth.[1] According to her daughter, Rooth English, she was not expected to live and was hastily christened in the Roman Catholic Church and given the name Mary in addition to Maud. Before her marriage, Agnes was christened in St. John's Anglican Church and chose to drop Mary from her name.[2]
She was raised in Port Dalhousie, Ontario,[3]and married Harry Millward English, a mariner, on September 12, 1905.[4] Their daughter, Rooth Margery, was born May 5, 1907, in Port Dalhousie.[5]
Harry became ill and died in 1916 at his parents' home on Manitoulin Island.[6]After his death, Maud and Rooth moved to northwest Alberta to live with Harry's brother William.[7] In 1921 Agnes and William were married and lived in Spirit River, Alberta, where William worked as a farmer.[8]
