"Menssink had arrived at the Cape at about the same time as Trijntje [of Madagascar]. In 1694 the Heren XVII (the rulers of the Dutch East India Company, of VOC) decided to improve the quality of beer at the Cape by sending out an experienced brewer. Their choice fell on Rutgert Menssink of Deventer, a Dutch Town on the IJssel renowned for its malt beer. Rutgert, his wife Gerbregt Berdenis, and their son Willem, were thus shipped to the Cape at the Company's expense, arriving on the 'Dregterland' in 1695. Willem was 30 years old at the time and, as yet, unmarried. His father was given 'Papenboom', a handsome property of some thirty morgen about one and a half hours' journey from the Castle, between Rondebosch and the Company's gardens at Newlands. It was plentifully supplied with water, both from the Liesbeeck River and the streams that flowed from Table Mountain". (Penn, pp.10-11) [1]
