Biography

Dora (Minchin) Hildebrand was born in Ireland.

Dorothea was born in 1818 at Myrtle Grove Cottage along with her twin Elizabeth (who passed away at a young age). She was the daughter of Reverend William Minchin and Mary Wright. Because of the loss of her twin sister so young, Dora never felt like a twin, and lived to be 95 years of age, decades beyond her long-gone little sister.

After giving up his curacy at Dunkerrin, her father Reverend William went frequently to Templeharry Church. The older children would walk, while he transported the rest in the "drag". That was a long, four-wheeled wagon (built by the Reverend himself). This was a regular Sunday journey.

Dora was a tall, handsome woman, and it was at Templeharry that Dora met her first husband, Patrick Savage, a little man much shorter than herself. It was at Templeharry Church that the couple married.

They lived at Cloughjordan, a few miles from Greenhills, and had a son William "Billy" in 1842, then along came Roger born in 1845. Soon after Roger's birth however, Patrick died.

Dora married, secondly Reverend James Slessor Hildebrand of Loddingham, Leicester, England. Again, the wedding was in the Templeharry Church on 21 November 1850, in the "bosom" of her family. (Upon his graduating from Cambridge, James Hildebrand had been ordained a deacon in the curacy of Manchester in the diocese of Jamaica, British West Indies (1848).)

After their marriage, her husband was posted to the parish of Ashfordby, Leicestershire - for just one year.

They had a daughter Rebecca Henrietta, born in 1851.

In 1853, her husband James was sent to Colombo, Sri Lanka (Ceylon), as headmaster of the Grammar School there (1853-1872).

Meanwhile, Dora's sons Billy and Roger had emigrated to Pennsylvania, United States taking their half-sister Rebecca with them. Dora visited in 1870.

United States Census, 1870: Recorded in Bellefonte, South ward, Centre, Pennsylvania, United States with her two adult children William and Rebecca. Aged 48.

UK Census Event Date 1871: Living with her daughter Rebecca in Dawlish, Devon, England. Aged 47.

Occupation: Clergyman's Wife

In 1874, James took Dora and Rebecca back to Manchester, Jamaica, where he served as an army chaplain, for just two years.

The Hildebrands left Jamaica for health reasons and travelled to New York, United States on board the Steamer Atlas, departing from Port au Prince and Kingston arriving into New York on 18 April 1876. Sadly her husband James died shortly after in June 1876.

Dorothea returned to England and was living at 28 Victoria Place, Clifton, Bristol, when her husband's will was proved. Finally, however, she returned to America.

United States Census, 1910: Recorded in Stone St, Osceola, Clearfield, Pennsylvania, United States. Aged 90 and widowed. Also in the household were here two children Rebecca and William, and William's wife Rebecca.

She died in 1914 at the age of 95, after thirty-eight years of widowhood. Cause of death: Colitis^[1]
