Hugh (Montgomerie) Montgomery First Earl of Eglinton is a member of Clan Montgomery.

Hugh Montgomerie, was the Second Lord of Montgomerie and the 1st Earl of Eglinton. He was born circa 1460[1] and succeeded his father, Alexander Montogerie, the Second Lord of Montgomerie.[2][3] He was the son of Alexander Montgomerie, Master and Lord of Montgomerie and Catherine Kennedy.[3][4]

He married Lady Helen Campbell, daughter of Colin Campbell, 1st Earl of Argyll and Isabel Stewart, on 21 April 1478.[3]

He succeeded to the title of 2nd Lord Montgomerie in 1470.[3]

He fought in the Battle of Sauchieburn in 1488, against King James III.2 In 1488 he was granted the Island of Arran for life, by the newly created King James IV.[3]

He held the office of Constable of Rothesay Castle in 1489.[3] He held the office of Bailie of Bute in 1489. He held the office of Justiciary of Bute in 1489.[3] He was invested as a Privy Counsellor Scotland.[3] He was Justice General of Scotland during the minority of James V, and a Vice Regent of Scotland.

He was created 1st Earl of Eglinton between 3 January 1506/7 and 20 January 1506/7.

He died in June 1545.[3][5]
