Biography

Richard Morris was born in about 1690 in Middletown, Monmouth, New Jersey to parents Lewis Morris and Elizabeth Almy. He married first an unknown wife about 1718 in New Jersey. Children: William, Henry, Mary, Margaret, James, Joseph, Sarah, Job, Lewis, John. He married second Mary Porter on 19 Jun 1741 in Monmouth, New Jersey. Children: Richard, Lewis, Robert, George, Anny, Phebe, Rebecca, Lidiah, Catharine.

"In 1716, he received land from his brother, Lewis Morris. On 9 May 1720,he had recorded the earmark which belonged formerly to his father, Lewis Morris. In 1733 he had lands in Nutswamp, Middletown, Monmouth, New Jersey. In 1737 he had lands in the same locality, when he was on the boundary of such lands.

1741, June 19. He married by license, Mary Porter, spinster. Joseph Shepherd, cooper, was bondsman. The signing of his will, twenty-one years later, proves that all his children, mentioned as under age, in his will, were by this wife. As he left, at his death in 1763, twenty children, of whom nine were minors, he must have been previously married, once, if not twice, to account for the additional eleven children.
