William was born about 1788 at Kelton, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland[1]. His father was William Muir, weaver, but his mother's name is unknown[2] (see research notes).
He married Jean Fairies (aka Faris) on 2 December 1814 at Tongland, Kirkcudbrightshire[3][4]. They had at least six children (all recorded with the name spelt Mure).
In 1841 he was living with his wife Jean, his son William (10) and Mary G Neal (11) at Brockloch, Kirkcudbright, Kirkcudbrightshire[12]. He was an agricultural servant aged 50. On Census night in 1851 he was working away from home[13] as a farm labourer aged 63 at Glentoo, Balmaghie for George Walker, a farmer of 240 acres[14] . In 1861 he was living with his wife Jean (79) and his grand-daughter Jane M Liddle (a scholar aged 7) at High St, Kirkcudbright[15]. He was a former labourer aged 73 born at Kelton, Kirkcudbright.
William died on 12 November 1865 aged 80 (which does not match his age in the previous Census) from paralysis at High Street, Kirkcudbright[2], and his death was registered (with no mother's maiden name) at Kirkcudbright[16]. The informant was his son William who knew little about his father.
Research Notes
Because no maiden name was given on William's death registration, it is difficult to confirm his parents. He was not the William Muir born on 10 December 1786 at Kelton, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland[17]. This William Muir, the son of John Muir and Agness Halliday, died in Virginia, United States according to a family grave stone in Kelton, Kirkcudbrightshire[18]:
William first son of John Muir and Agnes Halliday, who died at Fredericksburgh Virginia America Feb 1861 aged 71 years
The age does not match this baptism, but ages at death are often wrong. The John Muir may well be a brother of William's father William. (Dickson-4413 22:00, 14 July 2023 (UTC))

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:
