Biography

Mary Jane Murphy was born in 1838 in Ireland, probably in Cork.

On 15 Dec 1860 in Cork, Ireland - Mary married the soldier William Arnott.[1] The couple had three children in Ireland, then sometime after 1866, the family moved from Ireland to Stoke Damerel, Devonport where William was posted.[2] The following year, William & Mary's fourth and final child Caroline was born in Stoke Damerel, Devonshire.

Since it appears unlikely that Mary would have suddenly divorced William whilst raising a baby and three other children, it seems likely that she died. There appear to be two main possibilities:

  • she may have died in early 1872 in Stoke Damerel, whilst giving birth to her daughter Caroline - but no death record has been located there;
  • possibly her husband was rebilleted to Farnham, in which case she may be the Mary Jane Arnott that died in Farnham, Surrey in Q1 1874;[3];

What is known for certain is that Mary Jane & William had had at least four children: Albert born 1862 Ireland; Jemima born 1864 Ireland; William Henry born 1866 Ireland and Caroline born Q1 1872 Stoke Damerel, Devonshire, England. It is also clear that on 14 Jul 1874 William remarried, to one Henrietta Barber, in Folkestone, Kent - and the following year the family, including all of Mary Jane's children, emigrated to New Zealand.
