Sigrid was the daughter of Nils Johansen and Kari Stenersdatter, born in Øksendal, Norway. Her father was a farm worker, who worked on farms for a daily wage. Her mother worked as a spinner. Her parents were not married.[1]
Sigrid's mother Kari died in an snow avalanche when Sigrid was 14 years old.[2] In 1865, when she was 22, Sigrid was unmarried and living with her grandparents, her aunt, and her year old daughter Ingeborg Amundsdatter in Øksendal parish. [3][4]
In 1873, Sigrid and Jon Jakobsen of Seter became the parents of a daughter Gjertrud.[5] Jon and Sigrid were second cousins through their fathers and paternal grandparents.
Sigrid married Anders Henrikson Jordal on May 16, 1880 in Øksendal Church, Sundal when she was 36 years old.[6]
In 1885, Sigrid and Anders were living in Kristiansund with three children, Gjertrud, identified with family name Jordal though she was Anders stepdaugher, age 12; Helma Sofie Jordal, age 5; and Alfred Sigurd Anderson, age 3. Randi Jordal, age 69, Anders mother, was also living with them. The younger two children were born in Kristiansund. Sigrid's oldest daughter Ingeborg had emigrated to the United States that same year.[7] Sigrid was identified on the Census as a "fatti siling," a poor person.[8]
By 1900, Sigrid and Anders were living in Trondheim. Gjertrud had emigrated to the United States to join her older sister, but Sigrid and Anders had a fourth child, a daughter Ragna, born in 1885. Anders was working in a factory; their daughter Helma was working at a cannery; and son Alfred was working as an apprentice for a watchmaker. Their address was Østersunds Gade 10, 3rd flat. They also had two men living in their apartment with them, likely renting a room.[9]
By 1910, Sigrid was a widow, living in Trondheim with her son Alfred who was working as a clerk in a shipping company. She had taken in two foster children. They lived at Jomfrugate 11, and paid NOK 216 p.a. rent. Their building contained apartments and three businesses.[10]
