Biography

Tofilia was born on 23 January 1884 in Mariendorf, Volhynia, Russia. She was the daughter of Herman Nixdorf and Auguste Kruger. She immigrated to Canada in March 1901 with her father Herman Nixdorf, step-mother Theophile and her siblings and step-siblings. In the summer of 1901 Tofilia worked as a domestic or farm servant for Jacob and Maria Neufeld in Rhineland, Lisgar district, Manitoba.

Tofilia married William Edward Dewitt in about 1905 in Hannah, North Dakota. They lived in the Alliance, Alberta area. Their children were Howard born 1906 in Hannah, North Dakota, Dewey "Roy" born 1910 in Crammer, Alberta, Herbert born 1912 in Crammer, Robert born 1912 and Bernice "Nellie" born 1915. In 1916 the family was living in the Red Deer, Alberta area. William left the family.

Dewey and Nellie were adopted out. Son Robert (may have) froze to death when he was twenty. Tofilia 's daughter Erane or "Irene" was born 20 February 1919. Irene was adopted by Tofelia's half brother, Fredrick Herman Nixdorf, and his wife, Erna (Schilk) Nixdorf who farmed in the Jansen, Saskatchewan area. Tofilia had a son, George Nixdorf, born 1922 who was raised by Tofilia's step-mother, Theophile in the Jansen area. Tofilia passed away on 5 June 1925 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Saskatoon.
