TAXES PAID - Lynn Twp, Northampton (now Lehigh) Co, PA 1785 - Paid taxes on Grist Mill 1788 - Paid taxes on Grist Mill The Grist Mill Peter owned in Lynn Twp was apparently on Sweitzer Creek; the being located in Weissenberg Township while the mill itself was actually in Lynn Twp. It was one of the earliest mills in Northampton (now Lehigh) County. The Grist Mill had been owned by several families. Peter sold the mill to Abraham Rex in 1794. Apparently, the remains of the mill are still visible.
LAND WARRANT - Mahoning Valley, Penn Twp, Northampton (now Carbon) Co, PA. 6 APR 1793 - Surveyed 4 JUN 1794 there was given to John Kuntz and Peter Nothstein a tract of land on the south side of Mahoning Creek containing 306 Acres. Patent, for this land, was issued to John Kuntz on 21 OCT 1809 after Peter's death (for $ 1.70); several heirs of Peter signed a deed conveying their rights, for this property, to John Kuntz on 10 AUG 1809.
DEATH - Peter died in 1804 without a will. Peter Nothstein, Jr., John Kuntz and Leonhardt Hontz (his brother-in-law) were appointed as Administrators in 1805. The estate was settled 2 DEC 1809. There isn't very much known about this transaction. In 1809 Peter Nothstein Jr. filed a petition which stated that personal property was insufficient to meet payment of debts (owed to Peter Sr.) in the amount of 139 Lbs, 17 Shillings. It was also stated that Peter Sr. owned two tracts of land containing 97 Acres and 57 Acres. Apparently the land was sold, to John Kuntz, to settle the estate.
BURIAL - Peter is buried in the cemetery, near the old church, at Normal Square, Mahoning Twp, Carbon Co, PA. and is the only known marked grave, of a Revolutionary War Veteran, in Carbon County, over which the American Legion fires a volley on Memorial Day. On Memorial Day, 1989 a new gravestone plaque for Peter Nothstein Sr. was presented in a ceremony (details of this presentation; ref. Morning Call newspaper, 11 OCT 1989 edition).
It is possible that Peter's wife, Maria Elizabeth (RIN 11) is also buried at Normal Square although no marker (for her) has been discovered to date. It was also reported, but not confirmed, that Peter donated the land on which the cemetery and the church are erected.
