Richard was born and baptised in 1837 in Eastrington, Yorkshire, England,[1] where he lived with his parents, George Nurse and Ann Jackson.[2][3]
Richard married Mary Sarah Robinson in 1859 in Howden, Yorkshire.[4][5] In 1861 Richard was a butcher and the family lived in Eastrington.[6] After his father's death in 1868,[7] Richard became a farmer.[8] In 1877 he sold up:
"TO be SOLD by AUCTION, by Messrs. GELDER & SON, on THURSDAY, JAN. 18th, 1877, upon the premises of Mr. Richard Nurse, who is retiring from farming, the whole of his Live and Dead FARMING STOCK, HOUSEHOLD FURNITURE. Also, about 100 Tubs of ROCK POTATOES."[9]
By 1881 Richard and his family had moved to Skircoat, near Halifax in Yorkshire, where he was a farm labourer.[10] Richard became a greengrocer in Halifax.[11][12]
