John Washington Orr was born February 13, 1878 in Van Cleve, Maries County, Missouri. He was the son of Marvell Orr and Elizabeth Barnhart. In 1880, John, at the age of 2 years old, lived in the Boon Township of Maries County, Missouri with parents Marvel, age 41, and Elizabeth, age 31, with his two brothers, George H. who was age 11 and James H. who was age 7, and his five sisters, Matilda who was age 15, Mary T. who was age 13, Martha E. who was age 9, Marilda who was age 4, and Cora I. who was just 2 months old.[1] John Washington Orr married Rosa Lily Burnham on November 18, 1900.
John Washington Orr died after a long illness on December 9, 1954, at the age of 76. He was buried in Fairmount Cememtery. Orr was one of 14 children. His parents, four sisters and one brother have preceded him in death. Brothers and sisters surviving him are James H. of Montrose, Missouri, Elmer of Blairstown, Missouri, Erve of Lamar, Arnold of Wiley, Mrs. Lewis Bilyeu of Meta, Missouri, Mrs. John Barnhart of Jefferson City, Missouri, Mrs. Martin Kusewitt and Mrs. Walter Weithoff of St. Louis, Missouri. Orr was a good husband and father. During the past several years, as his health failed him, he was patient and loving. He united with the Christian church 55 years ago near Meta. Funeral services for John W. Orr were held from the First Christian Church in Lamar Saturday with the Rev Maurice W. Sirater officiating. "God Will Take Care Of You" and "Going Down The Valley" were sung by Mrs. Carolyn Bridge, Mrs. Mary Welmer, Lester Scriven and Willard Carlson, accompanied by Mrs. Clarence G. Guy. Casket bearers were Alonzo Page, James Mitchell, George Copeland, Joe Scriven, Giles H. Strong and Clarence Courkanp. Burial followed at Fairmount Cememtery. Kirkpatrick Duggan was in charge of arrangements.[2]
