Mrs. S. L. Donnelly
Dead
A 79 YEARS RESIDENT
Another very old and beloved citi-
zen of Bathurst has passed to her
rest. Mrs Sarah Louisa Donnelly died
yesterday afternoon at her residence
in George street at about 4.30. The
deceased lady was 82 years of age,
and had resided in the West for 79
years, having arrived here with her
parents Mr. and Mrs Thomas Parker,
when was three years of age.
She was born on the River Slaney,
County Wexford, in sight of the fa-
mous Vinegar Hill. The family came
straight to the Western District upon
their arrival in Australia, and their
belongings were transported over the
mountains by bullock team.
The Parker family first resided at
O'Connell, and afterwards shifted to
Fish River, near Oberon.
The deceased lady was married to
Mr. Henry Donnelly in the old Ca-
tholic Church at Bathurst, on the site
where the Patrician Brothers' School
now stands. They went to Brisbane
Valley, Essington to reside. Mr.
Donnelly died when his wife was
quite a young woman, and she was
left with a large family. Her loss
was a sad blow, as her marriage had
been a very happy one, and she and
her husband were greatly devoted to
one another and to their family. Five
of the children were under ten years
of age at the time of the father's
death, but with fine motherly devo-
tion and courage, Mrs Donnelly rear-
ed her family in a most exemplary
manner, in spite of a full share of
trouble. The death of several child-
ren brought periods of sorrow, partic-
ularly the loss of a most promising
son, Edward Augustus, who was one
of St. Stanislaus' most esteemed stu-
dents, and who was killed by a flash
of lightning just when he had finish-
ed a University course and had rea-
ched the age of manhood.
The sons and daughters of the fam-
ily, who are still living are Messrs
James, John, Thomas, Eugene, and
Patrick, Mrs. Crossley (Sogala) and
Miss Lizzie Donnelly.
A remarkable coincidence is that
Mrs Donnelly's mother also died at
the age of 82, and recently, having
also attained that age, she began to
anticipate the end. On her 82nd
birthday, she remarked, quite cheer-
fully, that it might be her last.
Her death was very peaceful. She
had been unwell recently, but in the
last few days had improved so much
that she had expected soon to be ab-
out again.
Three brothers of the late Mrs.
Donnelly are still living. Mr. Eugene
Parker (91) resides at Bondi and
Messrs Patrick and William Parker
(80 and 79 respectively) are in West
Australia.
The Donnelly family have resided
in Bathurst for about 35 years and
the firm of Donnelly Bros., motor gar-
age proprietors, is well known thro-
ughout the West.
The funeral will take place this
morning leaving the residence, 69
George street, at 11.30.
