Valentine Peyton was born about 1700 or 1710.[1] He married Francis Harrison, daughter of Thomas Harrison.[2] Their children included Craven and Robert.[3]
He was a prominent citizen of Virginia, serving as clerk of the court of Stafford County. Serving in this position past the time that Captain Valentine Peyton passed away.[4]
Valentine Peyton, Gent. died after November 1752 but before September 10, 1761, when his son Robert, being a minor, was represented in court by John Peyton, his Guardian.[5]
Research Notes
Estimated Birth Date
"About 1700" birth is a guess based on his son Robert's birth in 1745 and Valentine's death before 10 September 1761, when Loudoun County Order Book records that "Robert Peyton, an infant, is represented by John Peyton, his Guardian.[6][5]
This profile (Peyton-221) represents the Valentine who was the father of Robert (m Ann Rush).
Peyton-15: The Peyton Society of Virginia maintains that the father of Robert Peyton b 1745 and who married Ann Rush was Valentine, but not the Captain Valentine Peyton (Peyton-15) who married Frances Linton,[7] whose son Robert married Ann Guffey in 1754.
Peyton-263: Another Peyton, Yelverton, married another Ann Guffey, who was born in 1758.
Payton-679: To further confuse matters, there is also a third Valentine Peyton (Payton-679) who married Sarah Randolph, but they did not have a son named Robert.
This Valentine (Peyton-221) is designated the "FE Line" by the Peyton Society of Virginia and Robert Peyton (married Ann Rush) is labeled FE-1.[8] The Valentine who married Frances Linton is the "G Line". Their son Robert (who married Guffey) was the "P Line" and listed with a "probably" until 2013, when the probably was removed and the P Line merged into the G Line.
Two of the Valentines are combined by Rev. Horace Edwin Hayden in his book PEYTON, of England and Virginia[9] — as noted in the following recitation of the G Line:[10]
"Peyton, Valentine {G} of Prince William Co., Va.; one of the two Valentine Peytons combined in Hayden as #36. . .b. ca. 1687, Westmoreland Co., Va.; d. 1751, Prince William Co., Va. . .Son of Henry and Ann Peyton (B-91); m. Frances Linton. Issue: +i. Eleanor Peyton. +ii. Henry Peyton. +iii. Robert Peyton. +iv. John Peyton. +v. Craven Peyton. vi. Valentine Peyton. +vii. Francis Peyton."
Son Robert, married Ann Rush
Robert m Ann Rush by March 1765. Their marriage date based on a deed of that date with "Robert Peyton of Loudoun County [Virginia] and Anne his wife." The transfer is for property sold to Valentine Peyton in August 1750.
In September 1761, John Peyton was the guardian of Robert, born 1745. Benjamin Rush became his guardian in November 1762 (the court documents called Robert "Orphan of Valentine Peyton, Gent., deceased").[5]
From Mary Gregg's research: "Robert's existence, and relationship to Capt. Valentine of Pr. Wm. is proved by one or more deeds which, I [Mary Gregg] believe, I have already posted." (See this post on Robert and Ann, and also this post on Valentine and Robert.)

Marriage information source: Hiatt and Scott, Book, "Implied Marriages of Farifax Co., Va." (Athens, GA: Iberian Pub. Co,, 1994). This was added to Valentine Peyton-15, but it was probably for Frances Linton, as it seems it was meant to support the 1719 married date added for Harrison (which can't be... she was born 1711).
...Craven PEYTON by Valentine PEYTON, which had been conveyed to Valentine PEYTON by Thomas OWSLEY by deed dated 25 Aug 1740.[11]

↑ Note from Mary Gregg: "Infant" did not mean "baby." It was a legal term referring to anyone who was still a minor.
↑ per Harold Davey of the Peyton Society of Virginia, who confirmed that while Robert Peyton b 1745 m Ann Rush was indeed the son of Valentine Peyton, neither he nor his father was descended from Capt. Valentine Peyton who died 1751.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Valentine by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Valentine:
probably not - the Woods quote continues. Among John & and his nephews, only Craven had children. It also notes that Craven settled in Milton, acquiring land to include "the old Lewis homestead of Monteagle", and married Jane Jefferson. That description matches Peyton-12.
Edgar Woods, Albemarle County in Virginia: Giving Some Account of What It Was by Nature, of What It Was Made by Man, and of Some of the Men Who Made It (Charlottesville, Va.: The Michie Company Printers, 1901), 295.
at the time of the Revolution, Robert was definitely an orphan. If John (his guardian in 1761) had been his father's brother, this supports the claim that he joined his uncle.
wondering if Craven, Robert, and John, sons of Valentine / nephews of John (with Valentine & John said to be sons of Craven) aren't this Robert & his brothers (currently attached to the "other" Valentine, d 1751... Robert is known son of a Valentine, probably either of the Stafford County Valentines, one d 1751 and one living past 1751 - which is Overwharton Parish & which is Dettingen Parish is a bit confused, probably from Hayden conflating the two).
