Narrative Mary Elizabeth POOLE was the daughter of Charles Richard POOLE (then a labourer) and Ellen Poole nee MARGERRISON. She was born on 5 December 1884 in Ecclesall Bierlow, Sheffield. Mary was baptised on 5 January 1885 at the primitive Methodist Chapel in John Street. Evidently she was named after her father’s older sister.
At the age of 16 she was an assistant in the family Grocery and Baking business in Fitzwilliam Street, Sheffield.
She married Albert WILSON on 2 March 1910 in Sheffield. The marriage was witnessed by her mother Ellen. It was a Registry Office wedding probably because Mary was already pregnant with Olga Ellen who was born on the 20th April 1910 in Cheshire (no doubt to hide the fact of Mary’s advanced pregnancy at the time of the marriage).
It was a happy marriage, with many tokens of affection being exchanged in letters and cards referring to Albert as ‘the love of my life’.
Their second daughter Enid was born in August 1912. They lived at 58 Mount St, Sheffield and had a servant.
Albert was conscripted in 1916 but was killed on the Somme in September 1917. This must have been a hard blow for Mary who had to support 2 children on a War Widows’ Pension. The family survived owing to Mary’s initiative.
Between 1920 and 1950 she lived in Duncan Road, Sheffield. Enid and her husband were given a council house in 1950 and Mary and her daughter Olga moved briefly to Oaks Fold Road and then to Fircroft Avenue, Sheffield.
She was bed ridden in the last 5 years of her life and died of Gangrene of her leg on 16 June 1966.
She was cremated and her remains scattered in Burngreave Cemetery.

Mary was a kind and even tempered person. She was bed ridden in the last 5 years of her life and died of Gangrene of her leg on 16 June 1966.
After the death of her husband Albert she earned money by various means:
Taking in Washing
Sub-letting their rooms to lodgers
Sewing
Cleaning
Giving piano lessons
Fortune telling!
Pawning her possessions (later retrieved).
Mary finally retired when her children were both working.
She entertained Olga and Enid by playing the piano, telling stories and jokes which Enid says made them helpless with laughter. There were jig-saw puzzle races. They stayed in bed on Sunday morning to save having breakfast, and got up to a Sunday Lunch of bread and jam.
Mary had physical problems arising from massive ulceration of her legs. Enid believes that this started because her mother would sit close to a coal fire for long periods. She would not have treatment, fearing that she would lose the leg. She also had a fear of hospitals.
