Occupation:
Fulwood Cottage Homes were built on Blackbrook Road, Lodge Moor in Sheffield and opened in 1905. The complex comprised 20 large semi-detached houses on a remote hilltop beyond Fulwood. Each housed 14 boys or girls in two dormitories. There were also sewing and knitting rooms and an assembly hall and a school nearby. The homes closed in 1960 when the buildings were used as a girls' approved school called 'Moorside'. The buildings are still standing - now used as housing.

Narrative:
Beatrice May POOLE, daughter of Charles Richard POOLE (c. 1857-1915) and Ellen Poole nee MARGERRISON (1862-1929), was born on 17 May 1895 in Sheffield, Yorkshire.
She was baptised on 25 May 1897 at the Primitive Methodist Church, John Street in Sheffield and was normally known as May.
From 1895 she lived in her parents’ home until around 1905 when they moved to 22 Thornsett Road .
May worked as an assistant in the Poole bakery business. Around 1922 her mother Ellen Poole moved to 2 Valley View, Holmesfield, Derbyshire and it is likely that May lived with her until Ellen’s Death in 1929.
May pursued a career as a foster mother and Assistant Matron. [Barbara Poole] ‘May was foster mother to Doris Cadwallander at some point.’ (Doris was born in 1915 so it is likely that May had this position from around 1920 - 30). May was at her wedding in 1964.
[Enid Womack] ‘I believe that Auntie May was Assistant Matron at Fullwood Cottage Homes near Sheffield’. She was quite strict and this was true even when we were little.
The register of 1939 records her as being a Foster Mother in the Grimstead household at ‘the Mendips’, Elmdon , Saffron Walden R.D., Essex, England.
She made a will on 2 September 1980 in Holmesfield. The executors were Barbara M POOLE, James Derek POOLE, Enid WILSON and Olga Ellen WILSON. At this point she was living at 14 Woodside View in warden assisted housing.
Between 1988 and 1991 Auntie May lived at Cobden House in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Cobden House was a nursing home. Derek Poole organised her accommodation there. Many of the residents suffered from dementia and clothes supplied by Enid Womack and Dorothy Sadler often went missing. It was an unhappy time for May. She died of Bronco Pneumonia on 15 December 1991 at Cobden House.
