Biography

Silas graduated from Monmouth College in 1879 and was admitted to practice law in May 1881. He received his A.M in 1882 and an honorary L.L.D. in 1905. He practice law with his father under the name Porter & Porter. He went to Kansas in 1886 and served as the 1st county attorney in 1887 and 1888 in Ness County. He practiced in Kansas City, MO from 1891 to 1899 and was elected a member of the Kansas Supreme Court in 1905, being re-elected in 1911 and again in 1917. He was chairman of the Kansas State Bar Association in 1901 and in 1900 was chairman of the Kansas State Convention of the Republican Party. After retiring from the State Supreme Court, Silas was a Federal Referee in Bankruptcy until 1932. From 1912 to 1917. He lectured at Washburn Law School, the University of Kansas Law School, and the Kansas City School of Law. [1]

Silas is found in the 1880 Census at age 23 living in Monmouth, IL with his parents, John and Mary E. and siblings Mary L, Nannie B, Charles H, and Ella. Silas gives his occupation as Student at Law[3]

Silas is found in the 1900 Census at age 43 living in Kansas City, KS with his wife Jessie B. and children Eliot, Dorothy, Richard B. and John M.[4]

Silas is found in the 1910 Census at age 53 living in Kansas City, KS with his wife Jessie B. and children Eliot, Dorothy, Richard B., John McGill and Garrett.[5]

Silas is found in the 1920 Census at age 63 living in Topeka, KS with his wife Jessie and sons John and Garrett. He lists his profession as Supreme Court Justice.[6]

Silas is found in the 1930 Census at age 73 living in Topeka, KS with his wife Jessie and granddaughter, Diana Campbell.[7]

Silas died in 1937 and is buried in the Topeka Cemetery, Topeka, KS.[8]
