Ellen is found as "Ella" in the 1880 Census at age 17 living in Monmouth, IL with her parents, John and Mary E. and siblings Mary L, Nannie B, Silas and Charles H. She gives her birth place as Illinois.[1]
Ellen married first to Charles Hanna and second to Thomas Gillespie. She had at least one child, Porter Gillespie, who is listed as her only surviving child in her obit.

She is survived by, beside her husband and family, three brothers, Judge Silas Porter of Topeka, Kan.; J. Robb Porter of Chicago, and Charles H Porter of Los Angeles, Cal., and two sisters, Mrs. George F Butler of Chicago, and Mrs. Thomas Donahue of Kansas City, Kan. She was a member of the Shadyside United Presbyterian church, Twentieth Century Club, and the Homeopathic Hospital Ladies' Auxiliary.
Ellen died in 1928 and is buried in Homewood Cemetery, Pittsburg, IL.[2]
