Lynn was born on 16 May 1939 to parents Curtis Eddren Poynor and Cloma Bell Davis Poynor in Tom Green, Texas. In 1940 the Poynors were residing in the home with Cloma's parents:[1]

Lynn's mother passed away in 1941 from Typhoid. The 1950 census[2] shows the ten year old Lynn living in San Angelo, Texas with his brother, CB Poynor and his father and a guardian housekeeper named Maurine Morrison. He grew up in San Angelo and went on to graduate from the University of Texas in Austin.[3] He served in the US Army as a linguist and translator. Lynn married Maxine Martindale in 1966 and they have a son David Poynor and daughter Stephanie (Poynor) Frizzell.
