Biography

Henry was born in 1919. He was the son of John Prole and Edith Land.

Like his siblings Henry grew up on the family farm and attended school in Omokoroa in the Bay of Plenty. When his father died in 1927 Henry was only 8 years old.

When the 2nd World War broke out Henry was single and working on a dairy farm in Morrinsville in the Waikato. His next of kin was recorded as his mother Mrs Edith Maud Hitchcock, Omokoroa, Tauranga.

Henry enlisted, as did his brother William. He served as a Trooper in the Army Tank Brigade, Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force. He was apparently a sniper.

He survived the war, returned to New Zealand and married Marjorie Joy "Pat" Little in about 1948. They had 4 children.

Henry had his own farm at Omokoroa where he kept pigs, chickens and milked cows. In those days the milk was separated with the cream going to the dairy factory and the skim milk being fed to the pigs. He had a few run-ins with the law over the years, and was quite well known to the local constabulary.

Henry and Pat parted ways, with their oldest son staying with Henry. Pat moved to the South Island with the 3 other children. Henry stayed on his farm in Omokoroa and employed a housekeeper, Winifred Baikie.

He had to eventually move into a retirement home in Hamilton as he was no longer able to work his property.

Henry passed away in 2003 at the age of 83. He was cremated and a plaque was added to the headstone of his parents in Tauranga Anglican Cemetery.
