Biography

Henry was born in 1802 in Thame, Oxfordshire the first child of Henry Reynolds and Elizabeth (Wells) Lupton. He was baptised at Thame on 10 August 1802.

His father died in May 1806 when Henry was not yet four years old. His father had been a solicitor.

His mother remarried around 1810, marrying Harry Lupton. Henry's step-father was a surgeon/general practitioner - a career Henry later followed.

On 9 July 1829 Henry Wells Reynolds married Anne Wells at Marsh Gibbon, Buckinghamshire. Henry and Anne were first cousins. Henry's mother, Elizabeth Wells, was a sister of Anne's father, Edward Wells. Anne was the fourth daughter of Edward Wells, this fact also recorded in a Reynolds' family tree prepared in 1909[1]. Anne's older sister Hannah Wells married Henry's brother Edward Reynolds later in the same year.

In 1830 the couple had their first child, a daughter Elizabeth Wells Reynolds baptised in Thame on 10 December 1830. Henry's occupation is recorded as surgeon. It is considered Elizabeth died in infancy[2].

In 1832 the couple had their second child, a daughter Augusta Mary Wells Reynolds baptised in Thame on 30 May 1832. Henry's occupation is recorded as surgeon. It is considered Augusta also died in infancy[3].

In 1834 the couple had their third child, a son Henry William Wells Reynolds, baptised in Thame on 27 August 1834. Henry's occupation is recorded as surgeon. It is considered Henry also died in infancy[4].

In 1835 the couple had their fourth child, a daughter Henrietta Margaret Reynolds baptised in Thame on 4 September 1835. Henry's occupation is recorded as surgeon.

On 24 December 1836 the couple had their fifth child, a son Edward Wells Reynolds, baptised in Thame on 1 April 1837. Henry's occupation is recorded as surgeon.

In 1839 the couple had their sixth child, a daughter Blanche Reynolds, baptised in Thame on 17 October 1839. Henry's occupation is recorded as surgeon. Blanche died later that year as an infant.

At the 1841 census the family appear to be visiting in Wallingford, Berkshire (St Mary's Lane in St Mary le More Parish) where the head of the household is recorded as Anne's widowed mother, Mary Wells, approximately 65 years old and born in Berkshire. (Anne's father and Henry's mother - brother and sister - were from Wallingford). This census records Henry (described as a surgeon) and Anne, together with their surviving children, daughter Henrietta (6) and Edward (4).

A seventh child, Walter Head Reynolds, was born in 1842. Baptised on 7 September he was buried later in that month.

In 1844 the couple had a daughter Anne Emily Reynolds, baptised in Thame on 18 April 1844. Henry's occupation is recorded as surgeon.

The death of Henry's wife Ann was registered at Thame in the third quarter of 1846. Her burial took place on 3 August 1846, aged 35.

On 29 August 1850, as a widower, he married Anne Holloway, spinster, at St James' church, Paddington, Middlesex. Henry's profession is given as surgeon. The church marriage register records Henry as of the parish of Thame, Oxfordshire, and Anne as of the parish of St James, Paddington. Henry's father is confirmed as Henry Reynolds, solicitor. Anne's father is Richard Holloway, esquire.

The 1851 census records Henry and his family at the High Street, Thame (New Thame). Henry is a general practitioner. Henry is recorded as aged 49 and his wife is 36. Anne is noted to have been born in Arlescote, Warwickshire. Two children, from Henry's former marriage are in the household - Edward Wells Reynolds (14) and Anne Emily Reynolds (6), both noted as scholars. Emily Sanders (10) is recorded as a visitor - she is presumed to be a relative of Henry's wife as she also is recorded as born in Warwickshire. Four resident servants are recorded.

At the 1861census Henry and his family are recorded as resident at the hospital, High Street, in Thame, presumably Henry's own business. He is a general practitioner. Edward Wells Reynolds (24), son, and Anne Emily Reynolds (16), daughter, are at home - neither showing any occupation. Also resident at the census is Henry's brother, Edward Reynolds (56), described as fund holder. There are three servants recorded as resident.

The 1871 census shows the family still resident in Thame, in the High Street. Henry is 68 and Anne is 56. Henry is recorded as general practitioner. His unmarried son Edward Wells Reynolds, aged 34, is again in the household, again with no occupation being recorded. Three resident servants are again recorded.

Henry died, aged 72, on 12 January 1875 at Thame. He was buried on 16 January 1875 at Thame.

His will was proved in March 1875 with two of the executors being his son Edward Wells Reynolds "of Sydenham in the County of Oxford, gentleman" and his widow Anne Reynolds "of Thame".
