Ellen was one of the Girls' Friendly Society seventy-five founding associates and wanted to support emigration. In 1883 the society appointed her as their "emigration correspondent". In 1884 she founded the United Englishwomen's Emigration Association. That same year she and her son, Arthur, accompanied 80 GFS emigrants across the Atlantic. They travelled as far across Canada as they could, on the Canadian Pacific Railroad, but did reach the Western Shore.

The new organization was very successful, having its own finances and by 1888 it had a change its name to the "United British Women's Emigration Association" as some of the Scottish organizations wanted to travel under her organization's banner. She lead the way in choosing emigrants and spoke at Church congresses. There was a lot of interest in Canada, New Zealand and Australia but as the century ended there was a growing interest in South Africa.

She died May 21, 1924 in Winchester, Hampshire. The probate was complete on September 10, 1924, the beneficiary being Arthur Gerald Joyce.

Research Notes

James Gerald Joyce in marriages was transcribed by Family Search as Ames Gerald Joyce, so this should be corrected when editing is available.

I have not found her in the 1901 or 1911 census yet.
