Thomas James who was the sixth son also joined the Inniskillings. He had remained on the farm at Drumbirn after William enlisted but one day when accompanying his mother to the market in Dungannon was persuaded to take the King’s shilling. Mrs Roberts was apparently devastated to part with her last boy at home. Thomas was wounded on the first day of the battle of the Somme and like hundreds of his comrades died of his wounds. He was buried in the AIF cemetery at Flers and is among the 4000 soldiers that rest there.
