Gowland Robson was born in County Durham, England.
Gowland was born in Sunderland, County Durham in about 1826. He was the son of John Robson and Elizabeth (Stockton) Robson.

In 1841, Gowland was about 15 years old, living in Pan lane, Sunderland with his parents and six siblings:[1]

Gowland married Elizabeth Warwick on 22nd November 1848 at Chester-Le-Street, County Durham.[2][3][4] In 1851 they lived with Gowland's family in Gateshead:[5]

Note, the two grandchildren's mother's maiden surnames were not Warwick (if they were born in Sunderland).

Elizabeth must have died quite soon after the 1851 census, because Gowland married Dorothy Elliott on 30th May 1852.[6][7][8] At the time of the 1861 census they lived in Briscoe Street, Gateshead with four children, possibly two of them were twins. Gowland worked as a cooper:[9]

In 1871 the family were still in Briscoe Street, at number 6. Gowland was a cooper, William an Attorney's Clerk, Robert and engine fitter, Thomas a Grocer and John was a scholar:[10][11]

In 1881 they had moved to 28, Alexandra Road, Gateshead. Three of the boys were at home; William and John were commercial clerks and Thomas was a provision shopman:[12][13]

In 1891, still at 28 Alexandra Road, only son Thomas lived at home. Gowland was a cooper and Thomas was a boilersmith:[14]

Gowland had died by the time of the 1901 census; Dorothy was widowed living with son Thomas at the same address.[15] Gowland's death was registered in Gateshead in 1891, age 74.[16]
