Mortimer Bainbridge Ruggles was born in Fort Wilkins, Michigan on 11 December 1844. He was the son of Confederate General Daniel Ruggles and Richardetta_Barnes_Mason_Hooe.
Appointed cadet in Naval Academy but never completed. Served on his father's staff and with Colonel John Mosby.
Assisted John Wilkes Booth in his escape, after Booth had assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. Mortimer Ruggles and two others met Booth and another by chance at a ferry. Even after learning what he had done, Mortimer Ruggles arranged for a stay at the Garret Farm. He was arrested and spent time in Old Capital Prison, Washington, DC. Released under general amnesty declared by President Andrew Johnson.
Mortimer Ruggles died after an operation, in St. Luke's Hospital, New York City. on 8 May 1902 in New York, New York County (Manhattan), New York. He is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Bay Shore, Suffolk County, New York
