Biography

(Richard) Stockton Rush, III was born on 31 March 1962 and his parents were Ellen Margaret (Davies, 1931–1988) and Richard Stockton Rush, Jr. (1930–2000).

As a child, he dreamt of becoming an astronaut and the first person on Mars, and had an interest in aviation and aquatics. He began scuba diving at age 12, and became a commercial pilot at 18 years old. He was later told his visual acuity would disqualify him from becoming a military aviator.

He obtained a BSE in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Princeton and an MBA from the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business.

He set aside his childhood aspirations of becoming the first human to reach Mars, instead focusing on exploring Earth's final frontier; the depths of its oceans.

He was an American engineer, pilot, and businessman. He was known for his exploits in both aeronautics and oceanic explorations.

In the mid 1980s he partnered with the United States Air Force, assisting with developments to the F-15 jet fighters and a variety of operations designed to counter threats during the Cold War.

Stockton Rush married about 1986 to a substitute teacher in the Lancaster school system. She is a GGgranddaughter of Ida and Isidor Straus, two of the original Titanic sinking victims. She is a licensed pilot.

He was the chairman of Remote Control Technologies, and director of Blue View Technologies.

In 2009 he co-founded OceanGate Inc. which used submersibles to ferry paying customers to the wreck of the RMS Titanic which foundered in the North Atlantic in April of 1912. His wife became the director of Communications for OceanGate.

He was lost at sea on 18 June 2023 while was piloting the "Titan" experimental submersible (crew=5) during a dive to the Titanic wreckage when it sustained a catastrophic implosion. ^{[1] [2]}
