Biography

Joseph Sanderson was born prior to his mother’s marriage to John Spencer in 1719. He died March 20, 1772 in East Whately, Massachusetts and was buried in East Whately Cemetery in East Whately.[1][2]

The Biological Father?

The birth of Joseph Sanderson, son of Bethiah Kemp and Joseph Sanderson "as she sayeth", was recorded at Groton, Massachusetts as 30 Aug 1714 in Chelmsford.[3] However, his biological father has been questioned over the years, and could be one of the following men:
  • John Spencer, his mother’s husband, was not the father; the child would have been about 5 years old at their marriage.
  • Joseph Sanderson, claimed by Bethiah to be the father, he is probably not the biological father. See WeRelate.
  • William Lakin is the possible father. In 2018, y-DNA research genetic testing of descendants indicates that Joseph Sanderson does not match the Sanderson family. Instead he matches the Lakin family of Groton. William Lakin of this family was close in age to Bethiah, and lived in the same Garrison House in Groton.[4] See transcript of interview at Extreme Genes.
  • James Lakin is possible due to same y-DNA connection as his brother, William, but at 7 years younger than Bethiah, this is less likely.

Also see transcript of interview at Extreme Genes.

American Ancestors comment: "Born in 1713, Joseph Sanderson was the illegitimate son of Bethiah Kemp and [unknown] Lakin. Later, in 1714, based on Bethiah's testimony, baby Joseph was legally adjudged to be the son of Joseph Sanderson. Y-DNA evidence has since proved he was not the son of Joseph Sanderson, but was a biological son of one the Lakin men of Groton, MA (all of whom descend from William Lakin of Ruddington, Nottinghamshire, England). FamilySearch Note: Joseph, born on 30 August 1713 at Chelmsford, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay, British Colonial America. "Joseph was born out of wedlock in Chelmsford. While his mother Bethiah Kemp’s parents lived in Groton, it is likely she went to stay with relatives in Chelmsford to have the baby. This may have been done to hide her pregnancy from the Groton community. The birth was recorded in Chelmsford as occurring on 30 Aug 1713, identifying the child as “Joseph the son of Bethiah Keemp”. Bethiah Kemp named Joseph Sanderson, a single man residing in Groton, as the father. The following year 1714, Bethiah Kemp and Joseph Sanderson were brought to court where she testified that he was the father of her son. He denied it, but the court still named him as the father and ruled that he support the child. The court also fined Bethiah for her fornication offenses. In most bastardy cases of the period, the court almost always ruled in favor of the female accuser. After the trial, the birth was also recorded in Groton, stating: “Joseph Sanderson the supposed son of Joseph Sanderson and Bethaiah Kemp borne in Chelmsford August the 30th day 1714 as she sayeth.” [Note: he was born in 1713, but the clerk made an error probably due the current year being 1714]. Soon after the 1714 trial, Joseph Sanderson married Sarah Page. They remained married throughout their lives and named two sons Joseph (one died as an infant), indicating that they likely never accepted Joseph (1713) as a member of the family."

Sanderson-3951 and Sanderson-439 appear to represent the same person because: I am cleaning up the site using a wikitree plus spreadsheet of matches: One of these two profiles is an unconnected branch, the other is part of the main tree, but they look to be the same person.

Sanderson-3649 and Sanderson-439 do not represent the same person because: Joseph Sanderson birth year is 1713 not 1714

Barb, You are right. The birth year should be corrected to 1713. It was the court finding that was a year later in 1714. "...The birth of Joseph Sanderson, son of Bethiah Kemp and Joseph Sanderson "as she sayeth", was recorded at Groton, Massachusetts as 30 Aug 1714..."

There's still multiple problems to resolve before a merger: the correct parents (DNA or court finding) and the other siblings and childrens profile's data. Hang-in-there!

Barb, Should I link William Lakin (Lakin-284) as Joseph's biological father?

Hi John, How do you feel about changing his parents to Bethiah Kemp and William Lakin? I've ordered a yDNA kit and I'd expect it to confirm Lakin paternal "roots." I'm not sure how I feel about the issue of using DNA as opposed to historic family trees. Was Joseph Sanderson, Jr. raised by Bethiah and her husband John Spencer? Tell me your insights.

Hi Barbara, please could you provide any sources that you have for Sarah Page as the mother of Joseph. I am looking at the proposed merge of Joseph's profile with Sanderson-439|Joseph Sanderson]] which has a different mother and appears to be well sourced. Thanks for your assistance in helping to resolve this discrepancy! Gillian
