Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Jane Savage is a part of US Black heritage.

Jane was born into slavery in 1810. Jane was 25 years old when she boarded the Ship Indiana [1] bound for Monrovia, Liberia, which arrived 19 Aug 1835. She was emancipated, along with 11 others, in view of emigrating to Liberia by her owner William Savage, Esq. through the American Colonization Society. It is likely that Jane was enslaved on Silk Hope Plantation which William Savage took over when his brother died.

Jane was traveling with what looks like a family group that included John Savage, who dies in 1839, and 4 children Ann (7), who knows how to spell, and Thomas (3) Savage, Sarah (16) and Elizabeth (13). It is recorded that she, Thomas and Elizabeth remove back to the US in 1841. It is unknown where in the US they return.

Research Note

See if she can be found in census records.

Research Notes

Place of birth was added based on location of owner's plantation in order to provide a general location for searches.
