Biography

NOTE : Catherine should not be confused with Catherine [LNU] who married Martin Bash of Westmoreland, PA.

Catherine, daughter of Ulrich Schallenberger of Hempfield Township, Lancaster, PA, is named in an indenture dated 1767 as the wife of Martin Besh of Maryland.[1] Since she was married by 1767, she is assumed to have been born before c.1745.

Research Notes

An unsourced Findagrave entry gives that she was the wife of Martin Bash and was buried in the Bash-Somers Cemetery in Pleasant Unity, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.[2] However, the Findagrave entry for Martin, prepared by the same contributor, appears to contain a number of errors, and it is not clear that the entry for Catherine is correct in any particulars. Martin is not identified as having spent time in Maryland.

1820 : In (Election District 9) Frederick, MD : Catharine Bash.[3] Household includes :

1 female aged over 45 (assumed to be Catharine)
1 male aged 16-25
1 female aged 16-25
2 females aged 10-15
1 female aged under 10
(This looks like a widow and her children aged between about 5 and 20. Catharine might be estimated to be aged about 50, and thus born c.1770. She is probably not the daughter of Ulrich Schallenberger.)

Died 1808 Unity, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania, United States. 1808 Unity, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania, USA. [4] 1808 United, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, United States of America. [4] Found multiple copies of death date. Using 1808

Buried Pleasant Unity, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, United States of America. [4]

  • Fact: Also Known As Cathrina Shellenberger
  • Fact: Burial (1808) Bash-Somers Cemetery, Pleasant Unity, Unity Township, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania, United States
  • Fact: Residence Frederick, Maryland, USA

Unknown-473728 and Schallenberger-7 are not ready to be merged because: Find A Grave has an undecipherable stone and there are no other sources that I see for Schallenberger as her maiden name.

Lancaster County Deed S-43 dated 25 Oct 1774 confirms Catherine, daughter of Ulrich Shallenberger of Hempfield Twp as the wife of Martin Basch. I'll reset the merge.

Unknown-473728 and Schallenberger-7 appear to represent the same person because: Catherine's LNAB confirmed via Lancaster County Deed S-43 dated 25 Oct 1774 made between (i) Jacob Shallybarger, John Witmore and Mary his wife, Martin Basch and Catherine his wife (Jacob, Mary and Catherine being children of Ulrick Shallybarger of Hempfield Twp, deceased) and (ii) John Shallyberger, eldest son of Ulrich Shallyberger deceased.

Thank you Gina. We had changed the LNAB to Unknown a few years ago. At the tine, I had asked for any source that showed her maiden name and none was forthcoming. Thank you for finding and adding this source.

No problem :)

There are three separate profiles for Ulrich, three for his wife (reported to be Anna / Catharine / Dorothea Strickler, and two for his daughter Catharine who married Martin Bash. I'll work on getting them all sourced and merged.

I found another Catherine, who is the mother of "John Martin Bash, II": https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Shellenberger-142

Did our Catherine also marry Christian Geiman, and have children with him???

Also, Johh and Martin are separate persons

Oh dear, this is getting worse and worse. Ulrich's daughter, Catherine (wife of Martin Basch), was living with her husband in MD in 1767, so it's not clear that she was the wife of Johan Martin Bash who is supposed to have lived in Westmoreland, PA. I don't know which, if either of them, married a second time to a Christian Gehman of MD. Perhaps the merge should go back to an unmarked match until it can be sorted out.

I know what you mean, but wondering how to get all the kids of this family into one family group??
posted by Janne (Shoults) Gorman
We do need to get all the kids into one family group, and I think the easiest way to do this is by : (i) detaching Catherine Schallenberger-7 from the Bash family in Westmoreland (ii) merging the profiles for Martin (Bash-86 and Bash-74), and leaving him married to Catherine Unknown (iii) merging poor Catherine Shellenberger-142 (who seems to have been thoroughly scrambled and conflated) into Catherine Unknown.

The profile for Catherine Schallenberger needs to say that she married a Martin Bash who may or may not have been associated with Martin Bash of Westmoreland.

And the profile for Catherine Unknown needs to say that she may or may not be Catherine Schallenberger.

I'm not 100% convinced that the family of Martin Bash of Westmoreland has been properly constructed, and so it's possible we may end up merging the Catherine's after all, but for the moment they probably need to stay separate.

Whew! Gina are you going to undertake this? It appears to be above my paygrade. lol
posted by Janne (Shoults) Gorman
Lol, actually, there's a better way to do this.

Keep Catherine Schallenberger married to Martin (of Maryland).

Move son Henry across to be the son of Martin (of Westmoreland) and Catherine Unknown instead.

That should do it :)

He's fine. He's attached as a son of Martin of Westmoreland, and his mother Shellenberger-142 has been set to merge with Unknown-473728.
posted by Gina Meyers
Unknown-473728 and Schallenberger-7 are not ready to be merged because: Catherine Schallenberger-7 married Martin Bash of Maryland. Catherine Unknown-473728 married Martin Bash of Westmoreland, PA. The match should be rejected unless there is evidence that the two men named Martin Bash were the same person.
posted by Gina Meyers
Unknown-473728 and Schallenberger-7 do not represent the same person because: Catherine Schallenberger married Martin Bash of Maryland, and is not known to have spent time in Westmoreland. Martin Bash of Westmoreland had a wife named Catherine, but is not known to have spent time in Maryland.

There is a link on the profile of the "Unknown" that takes me to FamilySearch.org, where her maiden name is Schallenberger
posted by Janne (Shoults) Gorman
That appears to be just an unsourced pedigree file that someone has uploaded, so it's not something I'd rely on.
posted by Gina Meyers
This is a nicely written biography, but again it is not a source. There are no sources cited for the information provided.

Evidence suggests that Catherine Shallenberger married a Martin Besh and resided in Frederick Co., MD in 1800. Census shows her there as Catherine Bash, head of household in 1820 census. ("Shallenbergers of Echo Mountain" published c. 1995, Martin J. Shallenberger, pg. 51; Family History Library; microfilm 2055320.)
