Freeman Thacher Sears was born on 29 Jun 1828 in Dennis, Barnstable, Massachusetts, USA as the third child of Freeman Sears and Mehitable "Hitty" Crosby. • Yarmouth Register, 20 Aug 1892 - interesting story in the same column reporting visits of his two sons - not necessarily related to Freeman - The new cat boat that was designed and built by George Shiverick, was launched last Saturday. Her dimensions are as follows: 20 feet 6 in over all, 17 feet 9 in waterline, and 9 ft beam, mast 29 1/2 feet, main boom 28 feet, gaft 18 feet; 99 yards for sail, center board 6 feet long, 4 1/2 deep, draught 2 feet. The boat was given a trial Wednesday and it is said she carried her sail well and reached fast, and her owner, Mr Shiverick, thinks that she will make some of the best of them hustle. She is a powerful boat as her dimensions show, and a fine looking one, too.  !Mr Sears is a mariner

• Vol I, No. 1 of the Chatham Monitor, 25 Oct 1871- here's a note: House and Barn Burnt in East Dennis "The dwelling house and barn of Capt. Freeman T Sears of East Dennis took fire from sparks of the chimney Friday afternoon and in a few minutes was burnt to the ground with all they contained, the family barely having time to escape. By this calamity Capt. Sears and family are left houseless and unprovided for, as neither food nor clothing was saved. Capt. Sears and sons are at sea. The wood also took fire near his buildings but by the persevering efforts of the neighbors it was extinguished with but little damage." Freeman Thacher Sears (1828-1915) son of Freeman Sears (1799-1879) also of Dennis, m. Elizabeth Snow of Brewster and had eight children. There are other local fires mentioned in the paper and of course the Great Chicago Fire had just happened on 10 Oct and there are many stories of local people who had big losses in Chicago and of the relief effort being mounted to help the people of Chicago, partly supported by the Young Men's Christian Association.
